Presentation Ideas

One of the ideas I liked from the presentation was to have the students perform a play, the teacher records them, and then fluency and speaking are discussed. The students can then watch themselves and critique how they sound and what they need to improve on with reference to their oral speaking, fluctuation, and voice.
Another idea I liked was doing an interactive writing with the students by having it projected on the big screen. Have students write on the marker board to emphasize, or change words. They all can see the text and be involved. It would be easier to read or write as a class by doing this.

"Doing" Internet Safety

My 17 year old sister and I had a good discussion about media and its influences. She was willing to listen to what I had learned, but wasn't that interested. She doesn't realize how dangerous things are or how concerned the church leaders are about the media. It was hard trying to convince her of that, but she committed to be more careful and set a good example with her friends and what they're doing with the media. So overall it was a valuable conversation and I think she did learn something and is going to at least be a little more consious of types of media she is being involved in.

Internet Safety

-What article did you choose?
"Leave It Alone" by Elder H. Burke Peterson

-What were the most important things you learned from the readings?
Satan will try to slowly win you over, and he's been successful at it. Don't go anywhere near bad or questionable material, just stay away. The light in each of us will grow dimmer each time because the darkness increases each time we have anything to do with this type of material. The media is really negativelly effecting families and this is the basic unit of eternity so we need to prevent our families from taking part in this evil material. Refuse to support the things with questionable material. The suggestions on the "Pornography" article were great and I think can just be summed up with educate your children and always be aware of them and what they are dealing with in media. Presiding in the home and with media was an interesting concept that I think is important to remember. I need to be aware of the new forms of media and learn what is popular and know how to set standards for my family.

-How will what you have read influence your actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?
I will definitely be more aware. Know when kids are dealing with media and be sure that the content is alright. I will not watch or have anything to do with questionable material becaues that would be the wrong example for my kids/students. Children need to know of the dangers and the bad material that is out there and know what to do when they encounter it. I need to take every precaution to keep children away, but make sure that they're educated enough that they know what type of material is inappropriate and how to stay away.

-How can you use what you have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?
Many of my siblings have children and I can be sure that they know of the dangers with the media and that they are educating their own children. I can also be a good example to my friends now and not take part in any material or media that is inappropriate or even borderline. I can stay away from bad material now in preparation for my future family. I will make sure that my future children are aware of risks and educated about media and ready to resist it.

Plan for technology assignment

For my integrating technology I'm going to do it along with science. My class has just planted seeds and they are monitoring their growth-So next week when there's been a little more growth with the plants I am going to have all the students to a journal write about their plants and what's happened- and some of the students will get to post the information on the class blog.

Technology Lesson Idea

I am in Miss Clayton's first grade class and it would definitely be possible to have the class help with the blog that Miss Clayton has. Right now each student is growing a plant for science and I think they would love it if they got to write updates of the experience on the class blog. The students love typing and working on computers-so this is just something simple they could all participate in. Some could help upload images of their plants, others could be keeping track of them or come up with learned information about the plants. This could be done on the classroom computers or we could reserve the school laptops and teach the students how to do it all at the same time as a class.

Technology Inventory

While doing this inventory I was actually surprised at the resources that were available and the knowledge of my teacher. I don't really remember working on computers at all or doing a whole lot at all technology based in elementary school. I think with the way we are all living now it is vital to teach children using technology, but also teach them how to use it.
With all the resources that are available in my school it's simple for the teachers to get help or get access to things and to utilize it in their content. Overall my school does have quality resources and I think that helps in teaching the most effectively.

tpack questions

Content:
Standard 2
Students will understand cultural factors that shape a community.
Objective 1- Evaluate key factors that determine how a community develops.
Indicators:Identify the elements of culture (e.g. language, religion, customs, artistic expression, systems of exchange). Compare elements of the local community with communities from different parts of the world (e.g. industry, economic specialization )
Identify and explain the interrelationship of the environment (e.g. location, natural resources, climate) and community development (e.g. food, shelter, clothing, industries, markets, recreation, artistic creations).

Pedagogy: All of the activities the students will be doing are active and involved. The content material will be directly applied and the learning will be guided, but also students will be able to discover on their own. Some of the work will be in groups and partners, while some of the activities are individual. While using google earth all of the students will be working individually to make sure they understand to program and can use it effectively. There will not be very much direct instruction in these lessons, but more hands-on work and students will present for the class on some of the topics.
Technology: Students will be using google earth and different links within it to find weather, location, geography etc. Students will also be using the general internet and looking up information on it.

tour plan

Location ActivityGoogle Earth Content
1. New York city, New YorkStudents will find the Empire State building in NY then, compare and contrast it to a building that we have here in Provo, Utah. Look at height, sizes and attributes of each the share findings with the class. Tie their findings into how the buildings and area affect the community and the culture.Students will find information on the two buildings using the internet and then they will look at the buildings in 3d view using google earth.
2. Hawaiian IslandsWrite a journal entry about what they would do if they had one day to spend on the Hawaiian islands. As a class we are pretending to go on a trip and each student needs to find out what the current weather is and then then write down what they would pack. With google earth look at the weather layer and the climate there. Then search the internet for the forecast for the coming week.
3. Giza, EgyptHave students draw the pyramids in an art lesson, and then have a class discussion on how our lives would be different if we were still ruled by pharaohs and if we still built structures like the pyramids. Students will look at the pyramids in google earth with the 3d view and understand their incredible size. Then they will do an internet search for dynasties and what periods the pyramids were built in and why they were built.
4. Washington D.C., White HouseStudents will write mock letters to the President of the United States telling what they think about how he's running the country. Talk about a democratic society and how our country is working and has worked.Using google earth students will search for the white house, in Washington D.C. They will do a street view of the building and look at the surroundings. Then students will break into groups and find different information on the building, surrounding area and background of our government.

Digital Story

Here is my story... the narration is really quiet...hope you enjoy!

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Content: Students are following the Utah core standards: Standard 1, Objective 2- They will develop language through viewing media and presenting. Each student will produce their own individual story and will need to present it to the class when complete. This project will enhance the student in many areas. Background information on community development and social interaction with others will be talked about and then the stories will be along those lines.

Pedagogy: The students will be working on the writing project in class, for this lesson it will focus on an experience they have had. Some materials that we may discuss and go through are Family Stories, ABC storybook, or Circle Story. The students will be viewing other student's work as well as presenting for the class and by having them each create a story from what they have individually done will be helpful in applying the content and enjoying the project.

Technology: I used the pen and paper storytelling template which helped organize my thoughts and ideas. It will help the students put their story in order and help the teacher to see what they have come up with. I also plan to use Photostory 3 which will let me show my pictures on the screen and add my own voice as a narration of the story.

TPACK

what is the content you are focusing on in your science lesson?
-Observing, analyzing, and predicting the weather- Paying special attention to clouds

What is the pedagogy you are using and why is it a good fit with the content?
-The students got to individually create their own charts and make their own personal predictions. This assignment helped them in thinking ahead and studying an aspect of life that we deal with daily.

What is the technology you'll be using and why is it a good fit with the content and pedagogy?
-Kidsperation- It is kid friendly and can be easily navigated through and used by students of all ages. It will also help the students analyze and review the previously learned material more effectively.

Tech Savvy Teacher

There are so many technologies out there for teachers to use to help them teach more effectively and help their students enjoy the learning process more. In this experiment we will look at one of those programs and see how it can improve the teaching experience.

The core that will be focused on is 4th grade Standard 2, Objective 1. It states that, students will understand that the elements of weather can be observed, measured, and recorded to make predictions and determine simple weather patterns. The purpose of this activity is for students to observe, and record the basic elements of weather, paying particular attention to clouds.

On different days throughout the month we went out as a class and observed the weather. These observations were done at different times during the day and all students got to participate. Going outside and actually observing what they saw, drawing pictures of it, and describing in words their observations were all part of the process. As a class we had discussions on weather, particularly the clouds and we learned what the three main types of clouds are: stratus, cumulus, and cirrus. After studying the clouds and learning about the types of weather they bring the students got to add predictions to their observation materials.

As a class we learned how to use the program Kidspreration and were able to apply that to all they were learning. With the program the students were able to review the types of clouds and weather and show what types of weather different clouds would bring.

They each were able to develop an individual chart showing what they had learned, observed, and predicted. Using the program the students were able to more effectively analyze their data.

Along with their charts there was a writing assignment to basically summarize all the information they had learned about the weather and clouds.

Google Sky

I searched around on google sky and was amazed at what it had to offer.  The clear pictures and images make it very interesting.  It would be a great tool in the classroom because it is easy to use and with the different resources the students should all be able to find something they enjoy or want to learn more about.  You can also look up constellations and things by going through numbers- there are degrees, time, and other ways to reference all the images.

TPACK

Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge-  knowing how to use technology to support content that you are teaching and using specific pedagogical methods and strategies.  It's all inclusive and effective teachers will use TPACK.  Basically you use knowledge in each of the areas to edify the other areas and help the students gain the most from the material.

Week 2 reflection

My favorite thing we did this week was the goodreads account. I never knew there was such a thing, but the resource is going to be so helpful to me as a teacher. I can keep track of books that I have read on there, as well as stay in contact with other teachers and see what recommendations they have as far as books go.
I also was amazed at the capabilities of the internet and the delicious account- There is so much out there technology wise to offer and I have had no idea. I'm excited to continue learning and seeing all the resources that are out there for me to use as a teacher.

my tech background

My technology background is not too extensive.  My senior year of high school I took 30 credits from a community college and received my Computer Application Specialist degree, but that was 3 years ago...so either I've forgotten the info or it has changed.  I do email, but I really don't have too much knowledge with technological stuff.
